Background of the study
Digital pragmatic strategies are essential in managing conversation and conveying nuanced meanings in Nigerian social media. On Twitter, users employ concise pragmatic markers and emotive cues to overcome character limits, while Instagram encourages creative expressions through image captions and hashtags that manage tone and context (Ibrahim, 2024). These strategies include the use of interjections, emoji sequences, and abbreviations that serve to clarify intent, manage politeness, and signal group identity. The study examines the pragmatic devices deployed on Twitter and Instagram, highlighting how platform constraints and cultural factors shape communication practices in Nigerian digital discourse (Okeke, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Although pragmatic strategies are critical in digital communication, there is limited comparative research on their use across platforms such as Twitter and Instagram in Nigeria. Existing studies often analyze one platform in isolation, neglecting the differences in pragmatic behavior due to varied communicative contexts. This gap hinders a holistic understanding of online pragmatic practices, necessitating a comparative analysis of these platforms (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To identify common pragmatic strategies on Twitter and Instagram.
  2. To compare the effectiveness and usage patterns of these strategies across platforms.
  3. To evaluate their impact on clarity and social interaction in digital discourse.

Research questions

  1. What pragmatic markers are predominantly used on Twitter and Instagram?
  2. How do pragmatic strategies differ between the two platforms?
  3. What role do these markers play in shaping digital interaction in Nigeria?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative evaluation of pragmatic strategies in Nigerian social media, offering insights that can enhance digital communication and inform sociolinguistic theory (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to textual analysis of Twitter and Instagram interactions in Nigerian digital discourse and does not cover other communication modalities or platforms.

Definitions of terms

  • Pragmatic Strategy: A linguistic approach used to manage conversation and convey intent.
  • Twitter Communication: Brief, public messages on Twitter.
  • Instagram Communication: Visual and textual interactions on Instagram.
